Pat Lee

When did you want to be a comic artist? and what made you want to work in this industry? What’s your favorite comic character?

When I was really young I used to always visit the local comic store Hobby Shack near my home in Toronto. After attending my first comic book convention, I had a great passion for comics. I remember it started at that point. I use to draw comics with my brother in my parent's backyard. Through my passion in collecting comics, I begin to grow interest in working as a professional artist and at the age of 18, I had a good opportunity to work in a large publishing company named IMAGE Comics. I have two favourite comic characters. Wolverine and Dark Night. Both very different from one another and with unique abilities. Dark Knight being very calm and Wolverine full of inner anger amplifying through his need to do good.

In your career life, among your numerous published and unpublished works, what’s your first creative comic artwork? Do you have any interesting experience?

Wow I'm not sure if I can remember the very first comic I created but one I do remember is an unpublished Transformers comic I did when I was about 10 years old. I would say in the last 25 years of my professional career, there is two things that I remember the most and I will never forget. One is good and the other one is bad. The good one I would say ... Ah! Let’s talk about the bad one first. There is one time I had a major deadline and I had to Fedex my work the next morning, so I finished drawing my page, and then my inker had to ink and finalize the page. I remembered he was inking on top off my artwork and he accidently spilled the ink on top my art and then I had to redraw the whole thing all over again and it was already like 2-3 o’clock in the morning, so I only had around 5 hours to finish penciling it and inking it to send it for FedEx Pickup. I had loads of meetings that day which I couldn't cancel so there was only a small-time slot I could FedEx my work. So, my inker actually stayed with me over night to make sure so he completed the inking after I redrew the art. We were able to get it done on time but it was a very scary moment for me because the deadline was very tight. And I would say the most exciting thing that I’ve experienced my comic book career was not only just my first job, when I was 18 years old when I got my first job. That was also an exciting event, but I think the most exciting time I had was in 2001 when we were working on Transformers comic book series and the sales Slammed the charts with approximately 140,000 sales for our first issue of Transformers No.1. It ranked No.1 in WIZARD magazine. That was a very huge monumental event that happened in my life and from there Transformers just kept growing and growing and growing from there. So those were two very interesting things that’s happened in my career and two events that I’ll never forget.

In your career life, who is the artist that influenced you the most?

Some of the creative individuals I collaborated in the past primarily have been artists like Michael Turner which was an old friend of mine, who unfortunately past away from cancer. He was one of the top artists in the comic book industry and it was such an honor to be able to work with him. I learned a lot from Michael and a he shared with me many different techniques On drawing. He used to come to my studio and hang out. He was such a great person to work with. Also, I worked with, Jim Lee. He was my ex-boss working at Wild Storm Productions. Now he's one of the heads at DC comics. I've worked with incredible writers like Jeph Loeb which is notorious for writing the Superman Smallville television series in North America.  He is an incredible writer. I've also worked on a small stint with Joe Mad who illustrated a cover for one of my previous comic titles called Darkminds. It’s really nice to see Joe's style of art on one of my creations. He was also one of the top comic book creators in the US at that time. I've also worked with music video director Joseph Kahn on a Janet Jackson music video called “ It Doesn’t Really Matter.” I worked with Josie HO on a comic book project in Hongkong and several other separate works with Chris Lee which was VP of Sony Entertainment and Producer of Godzilla, Final Fantasy and many other major motion pictures. He was my ex-manager at Chris Lee Productions and still today a good friend.  Collaborated with many others but too long to list here. I'm also currently working and collaborating with other artists as well but unfortunately, I can’t say at this moment in time. I really love working with other artist I think it’s really fun to do and it’s exiting when an artist works with another artist, you see what you can come up with and I think that’s why people love cross overs and so forth.

Compared the famous Japanese, Korean and local comics, lots of American comic artists need to create based on the existed characters. How do you make your own personal style and features?

Actually, many North American artists have creator owned titles that they publish. However, many of those artists had previously worked on Marvel and DC titles. Creating a personal style was not easy. It takes an incredible amount of time to develop and each artist has their own method. Personally, I have always enjoyed manga and Japanese anime so much of my influence comes from there since I was very young. I also grew up in the skateboard scene and enjoy brands like Powell Parelta, Bones Brigade, VISION and Santa Cruz. I have a massive collection of skateboard stickers. I've always loved drawing machines and robots. I enjoy clean lines and clean graphics and the skateboard culture has loads of those type of graphics.

What’s the influence for your artwork creation from your intercultural family background? Will you plan to make some new attempts in your future creation? What’s those in details?

I'm currently developing a 3D animated series with my partners in Hong Kong. Since I really enjoy researching space and technology, the series will mainly be focused about space. 3D animation is challenging with regards to production but it's extremely satisfying when you watch your own animated show! I'm excited about this project because it also is associated with my background culture and we hope to launch in China soon.

It’s your first time to launch an exhibition in SH, do you have any special experiences from it? Did it bring you any inspiration from the Shanghainese customs and culture that you want to share with your fans?

I really enjoy Shanghai. When I paint there, it's very relaxing and don't get any sense of pressure. There are tons of places in Shanghai which I enjoy studying and places where I can be creative. The scene is quite nice and I take a lot of pictures there since the architecture is very nice in certain parts of Shanghai.

For this exhibition, do you have any expectation or ideas that you want to share with your fans?

I mainly just want people to enjoy themselves. I really enjoy putting in hidden messages into my work like a code. I think that's what's most fun about creating visuals is that the painting or piece of art is defined differently with everyone. My topic is about how technology changes us and how it's growth perhaps is too rapid for our own human evolution - but I raise the questions rather then giving any answers because my intent is just to share the subject and let others conclude on their perspective on how our future will be. Nonetheless, technology will continue it's rapid growth and we'll soon understand which road it takes us down.

When will you have new works (any kinds of new works) released? Can you share with us some information of your new works?

I'm planning to release a collection of my own collectible toys very soon. I have lots of things planned for the next few years and a great support team behind me.
